Mobile Health Apps – Consumer Use Limited 

According to a new report by the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics, few health-related mobile applications have gained popularity among consumers.

“For the study, researchers examined about 16,275 mobile apps that they determined had "genuine" health content for consumers (Comstock, MobiHealthNews, 10/30).”

Maternity Module Trialled by Midwives

The Myrddin patient administration system for community midwives is being piloted by Powys Health Board in Wales.

“The health board went live with the maternity module of the PAS earlier this month. It gives midwives remote access to the system, which allows them to review and update mother and baby details on laptops during home visits.”

5 Tips for handling mobile devices

Focus on the patient, not the device.  Those are the words of wisdom offered by digital omnivore, Iverson Bell MD to doctors trying to figure out how to adapt to the proliferation of mobile devices in their lives and practices.

“Speaking at the AHIMA Convention and Exhibit in Atlanta, Bell, a psychiatrist at the University of Tennessee's Health Science Center, described a digital omnivore as someone who uses all of the range of mobile computing devices, including a desktop, laptop, smartphone and tablet, with some frequency.”

Harmful Drug Interactions could be found by Internet Search Data

CNBC has reported that according to researchers at Microsoft Research Labs and Stanford University, internet searches could help FDA and pharmaceutical companies discover previously unknown, harmful prescription drug interactions.

 After finding in 2011 that patients taking two prescription drugs -- paroxetine, an antidepressant, and pravastatin, a cholesterol-lowering medication -- could develop hyperglycemia, Stanford Bioengineering Department Chair Russ Altman and Microsoft Research Managing Co-Director Eric Horvitz discussed whether the reaction could have been discovered earlier looking at patients' Internet searches.”

Mobile App for Mental Illness developed

The New Hampshire Public Radio has reported that Dartmouth researchers are capitalizing on the widespread use of mobile devices by developing mobile health applications to help treat individuals with mental illnesses.

“Although underserved populations often cannot afford personal computers, a significant portion of them use smartphones to access the Internet.”

Reporting to the Vice President/CIO, the Director of Clinical Informatics is responsible for overseeing the Health Information Exchange, Meaningful Use and Patient Engagement Programs at CHOC. This includes HR functions, budgeting and financial management, planning and strategy development and program overall functionality.
